Concentration Tracks

Concentration courses will account for 16 of the 30 major credits. Students may choose up to three areas of concentration and must take at least three courses (one or more credits) in each area for it to qualify as a concentration.

Note that certain concentration areas have specific course requirements and restrictions. If you exceed the 16 credits, those additional credits can be applied to general electives. The lists of preapproved courses in each area are avilable below. Email promusic@berklee.edu for more information. 

Many of the concentration areas are also minors. Students must commit to the minimum requirements of those minors in order to apply the courses as an area of concentration. If you are interested in the video game scoring minor or musical theater performance minor, you will need to officially declare the minor in order to be able to register for the minor’s courses. The minor in music technology is only offered in Valencia and can be completed in one semester of study.

Once a student has chosen their concentration(s), they will work with the department chair or faculty advisor to design a learning plan that works best. Concentration courses are preapproved by the chair, and each student creates a course map to outline their remaining semesters of study. Certain concentration areas have specific course requirements or restrictions.

Final Capstone Project

The student will complete a major final project in the designated area of concentration whose content and/or enactment is equal in quality and extent to the demands of the current professional music environment.

Note: Credit by exam is not offered for professional music.
