Young Flamenco Project

The Young Flamenco Project is an initiative of Berklee College of Music and Spain Arts & Culture created to promote the career of young Spanish flamenco artists in the U.S. and, at the same time, support the spread of this rich musical language at an international level.

Spain Arts & Culture is a program at the Spanish Embassy in Washington, D.C., that promotes Spanish culture in the U.S. One of its main objectives is to make cultural exchange between creators of both countries easier.

Five of Spain’s top young Flamenco artists, singer Saúl Quirós, singer Tamara Escudero, guitarrist Israel Cerreduela, percussionist Rafael Jiménez "El Chispas" and dancer Belén Lopéz appeared in the U.S. for the first time for a concert of traditional music and Latin jazz with some of Berklee’s most inspiring international students under the direction of the Grammy Award winner Javier Limón.

Featuring a band of 16 musicians from seven countries, the November 2011 concert was sold out and the band spent a week in a recording studio chronicling this unique musical experience for the first MMI recording, Young Flamenco Project.

The concert featured some of Spain’s greatest up-and-coming young flamenco vocalists, dancers, percussionists, and guitarists. Some of these artists have collaborated with the world’s best-known Spanish performers, including Sara Baras, Joan Manuel Serrat, and Jorge Pardo.
