José Mercé and the Balkan Choir
José Mercé, one of Spain’s top flamenco artists, visited Berklee under the invitation of Javier Limón. He was impressed by the students' level of musicianship and asked the Berklee Balkan Choir to perform on his October 2012 record, Mi Única LLave, released by Blue Note. The choir, led by musical director Christiane Karam, was composed of 13 Berklee students.
The fusion of the Balkanic sounds, flamenco rhythms, and his voice makes this a unique musical experience and a completely new one in the Spanish flamenco scene. The choir also performed with him at a private concert at the Gabarron Foundation in New York for an audience that included music industry leaders.
