Make It Yours: Developing Your True Compositional Voice
This course explores what, at this point in a student's composition development, makes one sound like oneself. Throughout the semester, the professor will guide students in how to approach developing a true compositional voice. This is a class about artistic truthfulness and the emotional narrative aspects of writing music. it explores compositional mindfulness and nuanced storytelling. Technicalities are rarely discussed. Students can use any software they are comfortable with; note that in-class deadline style writing exercises require facility in composing in a DAW. These exercises are designed to spur on gut-writing by using different triggers and angles of approach. In this course, students also discuss timeless questions, such as why they write, and experiment with classic writing tricks that are as old as music itself.
