Advanced Topics in Music Technology

Technology offers today's musicians unprecedented opportunities for creative expression via the development of new performance interfaces, interactive platforms, and multimedia environments. At the same time, digital distribution and mobile applications are allowing musicians to reach untapped audiences, even as older formats decline in prominence. This course prepares students for the challenges of the new digital economy by sampling some of the most prominent and promising of the new technologies available to today's cutting edge musicians. Topics to be covered include the following: sensing mechanisms for performance and interactive installations; control systems for actuating acoustic sound; the app as the successor to the CD; web pages as platforms as well as distribution mechanisms; real-time visuals for live performance; data processing, sonification, and visualization. Students will take a hands-on approach, with follow-along demonstrations and lab time in every class, allowing them to learn through experimentation and experience. Coursework will build on student experience using Max, while also demonstrating how the skills they've already acquired apply to text-based programming languages, with an emphasis on JavaScript as used in HTML5 applications.
