Singing Sondheim

Stephen Sondheim is one of the most influential musical theater composers and lyricists of our time. His productions are unique, both in depth of meaning and musicality. The students in this course would not only sing the music of Sondheim, but study their chosen music  and shows in depth, from the themes, the background rationale for the show and songs, the various productions over the years. They would also study the compositional techniques, and learn about the man and his music. Each student would be responsible for learning one solo song and one duet with another class member. At the end of the semester they would present, not just a musical recital, but a lecture presentation about their chosen material, outside of class time. Since the music is of Sondheim is very difficult and challenging, this class would be by audition.
