This week, the Berklee Jazz and Gender Justice Group, directed by Terri Lyne Carrington, performs originals "Black Swan Dance" and "20/20" by the group's pianist Camila Cortina Bello and saxophonist Veronica Leahy. This performance was part of the 2020 virtual Monterey Jazz Festival and features Leahy on saxophone, Bello on piano, Wenju Wu on bass, and Ivanna Cuesta Gonzalez on drums.
About the Artists
Each of these performers is part of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice founded by Terri Lyne Carrington. This institute focuses on equity in the jazz field and the role that jazz plays in the larger struggle for gender justice. The institute celebrates the contributions women have made in the development of the art form as well as frames more equitable conditions for all pursuing careers in jazz in an effort to work toward a necessary, lasting cultural shift in the field.
