Berklee and Kaiwen Academy Partner to Bring Contemporary Musicianship to K–12 Chinese Students
Berklee College of Music and Kaiwen Academy in Beijing, China, have announced an exclusive partnership to provide modern music training for K–12 students in China. Pairing Berklee’s experience and renowned music curriculum with one of China’s premier K–12 educational institutions, the initiative seeks to cultivate a new generation of contemporary musicians in China, as well as bolster the global presence of both Berklee and Kaiwen Academy.
“Since its establishment in 2016, Kaiwen Academy believes in the concept of holistic education,” said Alan Hao, CEO of Kaiwen Arts. “Arts education is an important part of our educational ecological system, and we’re honored to launch an exclusive partnership with Berklee College of Music to provide students with a world-class music education, and helping young artists achieve their professional music dreams.”
As the first international educational institution listed on the China stock exchange, Kaiwen Academy promotes the holistic development of students in pursuit of art, STEM, and physical education. This partnership with Berklee not only brings world-class creative education resources to Kaiwen but also brings the latest music concepts and knowledge to Chinese music lovers. Additionally, it will provide opportunities for significant cultural exchanges between Chinese students and Berklee College of Music artists and educators through workshops, music camps, and master classes.
Berklee will enhance Kaiwen’s current curricular offerings by providing programs designed to hone students’ essential performance skills and techniques in a wide variety of genres and styles. The program will ensure that both Kaiwen and non-Kaiwen students can create, exchange, and perform with internationally renowned artists. Students may select from winter and summer programs in music production and technology, contemporary music, and/or musical theater performance. Students who complete the program will receive a certificate of participation.
“Berklee is dedicated to nurturing the creative and career potential of the world’s most inspired artists, and we aspire to be influential and relevant to the global music and creative industries,” said Panos A. Panay, senior vice president for global strategy and innovation at Berklee. “The amount of talent in China is amazing, and we are constantly impressed with how the music industry there is growing and innovating. Berklee has been very influential and helpful in the development of the music industries in the U.S., South Korea, and elsewhere in the world. We’d like to have a similar positive impact in China.”
This partnership will allow Kaiwen schools to host renowned, award-winning artists and educators from Berklee multiple times each year. The programs will provide students with hands-on, creative educational experiences in performance, music technology, and production, and also feature performances and special events by Berklee faculty and alumni in China.
