Berklee Alumni and Faculty Nominated for 2016 Latin Grammy Awards
Twelve Berklee alumni and one faculty member received 14 Latin Grammy Award nominations for producing, mixing, engineering, and songwriting across five categories. Fifteen-time Latin Grammy Award winner Juan Luis Guerra ‘82 is nominated for Album of the Year, alongside Tommy Torres ‘93, Adrián Trujillo ‘11, and Berklee Online student Fraser T. Smith for their work on Jesse & Joy’s album Un Besito Mas. Smith is a previous Grammy winner who has produced and written songs for Adele, Sam Smith, Lily Allen, and the Kaiser Chiefs.
Recording engineer Gustavo Celis ’94, who has won six Latin Grammys, received a nomination in the Record of the Year category for his work with Carlos Vives and Shakira on the song “La Bicicleta.” He was also nominated for Album of the Year for his work with Diego Torres on the album Buena Vida.
Javier Limón, artistic director of Berklee's Mediterranean Music Institute, produced José Mercé’s Album of the Year nominee Doy La Cara. The album features performances from Berklee students and alumni including Helen de La Rosa, Inés Velasco, Marta Roma, Tania Mesa, Layth Sidiq, Dan Lay, Paul F. Sanchez, and Nacho González.
Winners will be announced at the 17th annual Latin Grammy Awards ceremony, November 17, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Univision Network will broadcast the proceedings live at 8:00 p.m. EST.
Since the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences founded the awards in 2000, 31 Berklee alumni or faculty have received 85 Latin Grammy Awards.
