Alumnus Nominated for Best Original Score at 2021 Academy Awards

Alumnus Emile Mosseri ’07 was nominated for an Academy Award on Monday in the category of Best Original Score. Mosseri composed the music for the drama Minari, which received six Oscar nominations. Mosseri’s previous composer credits include the films Kajillionaire, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, and Coach Jake, in addition to the HBO series Random Acts of Flyness and Amazon Prime’s second season of Homecoming.

A number of Berklee alumni and faculty were involved in Academy Award–nominated films this year. Professor Tia Fuller is the saxophonist behind the music of Dorothea Williams, a character in the Pixar film Soul, nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score, and Best Sound. Professor Linda May Han Oh performed bass in Soul, and Terri Lyne Carrington, founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, served as an artistic advisor for the film. Branford Marsalis ’80 worked as the music director for the twice-nominated drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Ro Rowan B.M. ’13 contributed their talents to the music of Minari, performing as a cello soloist on Mosseri’s score, while Zoe Lustri B.M. ’14 worked on the music preparation for the film.

The 93rd annual Academy Awards will be held at Union Station and the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, April 25, and will be broadcast on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET.
